Cullari The Vineyards and Winery is the newest member of the Uncork York Wine Trail in central Pennsylvania. Founded in 2007, Vineyards Cullari is the culmination of more than 40 years of winemaking for the owner of Salvatore Cullari. A native of Italy, Salvatore has a long family tradition of winemaking, but until recently, only family and friends were fortunate to enjoy the fruits of their work. Cullari family has a farm located a mile from the tasting room and began to grow wine grapes in 2000. From now on, the Cullaris have about four acres of the farm dedicated to grapes. This explains the earth about 65% of the grapes appear in their wines. The rest of the grapes that make up the 5,000 liters of wine they produce each year are grown at several locations within 350 miles of the winery.

Brenda and I we got to the chocolate tasting room in 1251 E. Avenue in Hershey, PA on a cold Sunday afternoon gray. We were greeted at the door of Cullari Dante, son of Salvatore. It was evident from the beginning that Dante is so passionate about wine as his father and the family business will be in very good hands for many years to come. Dante showed us the tasting room and described some of the wines before sitting down to taste.

Dante was particularly enthusiastic in Black and White Cullari Old Country red wines. The White Paper on White is a unique semi-dry wine that can only be purchased at the winery. Sine I'm not a wine expert, just going to say it had a crunchy, flavor sweet that I found very enjoyable. The Cullari are especially proud that in 2007 the supply of White on White sold within a month they become available.

The Old Red County mixing prescription from a "family secret" of several vinifera grapes brought to this country from Europe. Salvatore has been doing this Cullari very dry red wine for over 40 years. It is being dry and rich taste was definitely my favorite Cullari offerings. In a modest $ 11.00 per bottle, I would Old Country Red heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys a dry wine with strong tannins.

Another specialty blends include a series of Cullari Simply Network of three wines. Simply Red No. 1 is a blend of Chambourcin (a grape commonly grown in Pennsylvania) and the chancellor with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Simply Red No. 2 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese grapes. Simply Red No. 3 mixture of equal amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with a "track" of the hybrid grape.

Cullari Vineyards & Winery also offers a full line of traditional wines such as Chardonnay, Niagara, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and after dinner, have two port-style wines that go great with your favorite chocolate or a good cigar.

The Cullaris welcome to bring your picnic lunch and enjoy it on its cover, or when the weather is a disaster like today, there is plenty of room inside to enjoy your meal and a glass of wine. Wines by the glass is available for $ 3.00, except for Port-style wines that are $ 5.00 per cup.

Cullari wines are also available at the Farmers Market Farm in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, and are offered in the restaurant Dafnoe in Hershey.

Winter hours for the tasting room are on Thursdays from 3:00 – 6:00 PM, Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, Saturdays from noon – 6:00 PM and Sundays from noon until 4:00 PM.
