Ferrari’s New Green Beast! Ferrari 599 Hybrid!

Over the past few years, there have been talks and speculations about Ferrari developing a new hybrid, which goes against their typical super car petroleum guzzling models. Well this past March, during the Annual Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, rumors and speculations turned into facts and awes as Ferrari revealed to the world their new Petrol-electric 599 Hybrid. Ferrari shocked the automotive industry by going against their normal convention. To add to their green initiative, they’ve decided to go the extra mile by deterring from their normal body colors… by going all Green!

The Ferrari 599 is a 200mph electric hybrid beast that aims to reduce it’s carbon footprint with lower fuel consumption. Moreover, it also aims to retain the Ferrari brand with phenomenal acceleration and performance, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds with it’s V12 6.0 Litre engine! It possesses three modes of engine power: zero-emissions electric power for reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, petroleum power where the engine uses petroleum to accentuate the power and performance that all Ferrari enthusiasts have grown to love, and mix of electric and petrol power where CO2 is reduced but fuel consumption is boosted. As groundbreaking as this new prototype is, there still is some negative feedback developing. For instance, will the silent ignition turn off car enthusiasts who take pride in the loud and explosive roar that the old styles of Ferraris uptake? Ferrari 599 GTB Hybrid Confirmed!

Okay so the rumors have been out for a long time now… ever since the Ferrari 599 GTB made it’s debut in 2006, it’s been said a Hybrid based on around the 599 GTB are on the project table for Ferrari. Ferrari has been nice enough to leak out some juicy tidbits over the years–more info can be found at my article here–but it’s only been a rumor…. until last Thursday.

Ferrari Going Green with it’s Ferrari 599 Hybrid Concept?

Reports suggest that Ferrari will be unveiling it’s “green” incentives this coming March, at the Geneva International Motor Show. Speculations have reported that the Italian Car Manufacturer will reveal a hybrid 599 GTB there.

Plans originally appeared several months ago and it was confirmed that the design was a legit project Ferrari was working on. Back in May, Ferrari patented this design according to Autocar. The patent covered six different layouts, all with one thing in common: two wheels being powered by an electric motor and a combustion engine powering the other two wheels. However, the Hybrid Ferrari is not entirely designed to save on fuel costs; instead, the hybrid design is more for better handling.

According to Autocar, “The aim of the present invention is to provide a four-wheel – drive vehicle with hybrid propulsion…and being at the same time easy and inexpensive to produce.” Ferrari went on to comment that the 4×4 system is not only more simple to produce, but it will be weigh less and friction will not make much of an impact. Moreover, optimal performance is not thwarted since the engine doesn’t have to use all four wheels at the same time. This is an option the driver can choose since, “The four-wheel drive that can be engaged enables the driver of the automobile to decide whether to use the rear drive or the four-wheel drive; in this way, the driver can use the rear drive in optimal conditions of adherence and can use the four- wheel drive in poor conditions of adherence”.

Although it’s not entirely designed to save on fuel costs, the design does reduce fuel consumption by 35% (17 liters per 100km) since it is a hybrid vehicle. So in 2010, Ferrari will kick it off with something that’s entirely new to them. However, they’re not the only power car manufacturers trying new things in a green way. Lots of supercar manufacturers are jumping ship as well, including Kepler Motion, Toyota, and BMW to name a few.
